Choose the grid size, word length and whether you want clues. Every puzzle tells you how many target words there are to find.

  1. Choose a fixed word length or a minimum–maximum range. All answers have at least three letters: two-letter words never count.
  2. Clues on: solve the definitions, then find their answers. Clues off: explore using only the word count and length rule. No answer list is shown in either mode.
  3. Press Start a new puzzle to apply your options; this replaces your current puzzle. The maximum length is limited by your grid. Nine-letter words need the 10 × 10 grid.
  4. Drag in a straight line horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Words can run backwards and overlap. You can also tap the first and last letters, or use Tab and Enter.
  5. Each distinct target counts once. Other valid British English words matching your length rule count as bonus discoveries. Bonuses never increase the target count or delay completion.
  6. Your puzzle, discoveries, hints and options save automatically in this browser on this device. Return or refresh to continue. Starting a new puzzle replaces the saved one.
  7. Hints are optional. With clues off, you can request a definition of an unfound word. Further help reveals its length, then its first letter; fixed-length puzzles skip the length hint.

Targets use a curated vocabulary with original definition clues. Bonus discoveries use a larger British English word list, filtered to 3–9 letters. Proper names, abbreviations and punctuation are excluded. This is not an Oxford dictionary; some real words may still be missing.

Open Wordwell online once and wait for “Ready for offline play”. The game, clues, word list and fonts are then stored on this device.

  1. iPhone or iPad: open this page in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Enable Open as Web App if offered.
  2. Android: open in Chrome and choose Install app or Add to Home screen from the browser menu.
  3. Desktop: use your browser’s Install app option, or Add to Dock in Safari on a supported Mac.

You can start new puzzles, use hints and save discoveries without an internet connection. Saves stay on this browser or installed app; clearing its data removes them. In-app browser previews may not offer installation—open Wordwell in your normal browser.

Phone installation needs an HTTPS address. Localhost works for testing on this computer.
